WAAD Initiative Focus

WAAD 2020 Vision

WAAD will transform the community understanding of the link between teacher knowledge and student learning. To accomplish this, WAAD will develop a system that provides diverse opportunities for career-long teacher learning. These diverse opportunities will enhance growth in literacy teachers and their students. Teachers who participate in this system will be celebrated for their accomplishments by community leaders and the media. Policymakers will depend on these teachers for their expertise in literacy teaching and learning.

WAAD Systematic Advocacy Tips

  1. Needs Assessment. Identify what is currently going on in your community, for example: special needs students in your area, and then determine what is lacking. The divergence between the two describes what your needs are. The next step is to make a “political” assessment: Identify who is supportive, who is undecided about improving programs for special needs students, and what they will accept. A detailed assessment takes a lot of time, but it is worth the effort.
  2. Planning. Design what you want to happen or change, how you will present your request, and how you will get the support needed for approval process. The plan should provide enough detail so that parties involved understands what is to be done, who is responsible, and how and when it will be accomplished.
  3. Contact. Present your request to the decision makers whose approval is necessary. There are many ways that you can make formal and informal contact with decision makers to send your message across for the special needs students.
  4. Follow-up and Evaluation. Conduct an analysis or “postmortem” on your efforts to determine what is working and what to change. This phase serves as a continuous cycle for current and future needs assessment.
